9 🏞️ Ridgevalley Lagoon Expansion Project Underway Now

Enhancing Wastewater Capacity for a Growing Community

Overview

The Ridgevalley Lagoon Expansion Project is a vital infrastructure initiative designed to address wastewater treatment limitations in the Hamlet of Ridgevalley, located within the Municipal District of Greenview, Alberta. As the community has grown, its existing lagoon system has struggled to meet increasing demand, prompting the need for urgent upgrades to ensure environmental compliance and sustainable future growth.

Project Background

A comprehensive study conducted in 2021 revealed that the Ridgevalley lagoon had accumulated biosolid sludge to the point that approximately 65% of its capacity was obstructed. This posed a serious threat to the lagoon’s ability to treat wastewater effectively and safely. Without intervention, the system risked overflow, environmental contamination, and potential service interruptions for residents and local businesses.

Scope of Work

To restore the lagoon's full functionality, a multi-phase expansion and rehabilitation plan was developed. The key components include:

  • Desludging and Biosolids Removal: A specialized contractor was selected to remove accumulated waste from the lagoon, restoring flow and treatment capacity.
  • Infrastructure Upgrades: Manholes and lift stations will be relined and modernized to handle increased hydraulic loads and improve durability.
  • Environmental Safeguards: The project emphasizes compliance with provincial environmental standards, minimizing the risk of groundwater or surface water contamination.

Investment and Execution

The municipal council allocated funding for two major contracts:

  • Lagoon Desludging: A contract valued at approximately CAD 430,000 was awarded for sludge removal and disposal.
  • Lift Station & Manhole Rehabilitation: An additional CAD 250,000 was designated for coating and structural reinforcement of supporting infrastructure.

These improvements are scheduled for completion between late 2023 and early 2024, depending on seasonal conditions and contractor availability.

Community Impact

The expansion project is expected to deliver several key benefits:

Benefit Description
Restored Treatment Capacity Ensures efficient wastewater management for current and future needs.
Growth Readiness Enables Ridgevalley to support new residential and commercial development.
Environmental Protection Reduces the risk of overflows and groundwater contamination.
Long-Term Savings Prevents emergency repairs and extends the lifespan of municipal infrastructure.

Rupee Junction's view: The Ridgevalley Lagoon Expansion Project is officially underway, marking a significant milestone in the region’s development strategy. Designed to enhance both environmental sustainability and local tourism, the project involves enlarging the existing lagoon, improving water management systems, and adding recreational spaces for residents and visitors. The expansion aims to boost biodiversity, support eco-tourism, and provide flood resilience to nearby communities. Local officials and stakeholders view the project as a long-term investment in Ridgevalley’s economic and environmental future. With construction now in progress, the initiative is expected to generate jobs, attract investment, and transform the area into a vibrant waterfront destination.
