Despite the dismal record, opportunities remain abundant. Bangladesh’s rapid urbanisation, growing population, and rising trade volumes have created enormous demand for reliable railway services. Expansion of freight capacity can reduce overdependence on road transport and lower logistics costs, making Bangladeshi exports more competitive on the global stage. Similarly, enhancing passenger services can ease congestion in major cities and provide an affordable alternative to private transport.
Furthermore, foreign investors and development partners remain keen to support railway modernisation, provided structural reforms are ensured. A disciplined and transparent BR can attract investments in areas such as electrification of railways, digital ticketing, and modern maintenance systems. Railways also align perfectly with the global shift towards greener transport solutions, offering Bangladesh the opportunity to build a more sustainable logistics network.
